at The Sugar House, 2130 Michigan Ave., Detroit
Doors at 5 pm, ceremonies begin at 6
It was absolutely impossible to get a drink in Detroit unless you
walked at least ten feet and told the busy bartender what you wanted
in a voice loud enough for him to hear you above the uproar. - Malcolm
Bingay, Detroit is My Own Home Town, 1946
Exercise your Constitutional right to drink cocktails and commit
revelry! Celebrate in style at The Sugar House on December 5 – the
date that Congress, in 1933, ratified the repeal of the 18th Amendment
and ended 13 years of Prohibition in the United States.
The ceremonies commence with a historical perspective on mirth, mayhem
and booze in Detroit by Amy Elliott Bragg, author of Hidden History of
Detroit.
“Since Cadillac arrived on our shores in 1701 — with three barrels of
brandy — Detroit has enjoyed a vibrant relationship with drinking,”
says Elliott Bragg. “And we all know that Detroit was one of the
wettest cities in the Union during Prohibition. No city is better
suited to celebrate Repeal.”
”As a self-described Prohibition-era saloon, The Sugar House is the
ideal place for a repeal day celebration,” says Kwiatkowski. ”Our
name comes from the Oakland Sugar House (on Oakland Avenue in
Detroit), the headquarters of Detroit’s infamous Purple Gang who were
responsible for the national importation and transportation
(bootlegging) of all the finest Canadian Whiskeys and Spirits during
‘The Noble Experiment.’ Celebrating repeal here is the first step - we
hope to make it a national holiday.”
Plus live entertainment with the heavy metal-cum-barbershop quartet
stylings of The Barrettes and the dixieland jazz from Sugar House
staple the Alexander Belhaj trio.
Period dress is encouraged.
COCKTAIL RECIPE: Twelve Mile Limit
1 oz. White Rum
.5 oz. Rye
.5 oz. Cognac
.5 oz. Lemon Juice
.5 oz. Grenadine
Named for the twelve mile marker that signified international waters
located outside of Atlantic City, the Twelve Mile Limit is a bit
sweet, a tad tart, yet extremely potent. Combine ingredients in a
shaker, add ice, shake with vigor, and strain into a cocktail glass.
